As Lindsay Lohan's arms were handcuffed behind her back Tuesday morning in a Beverly Hills courtroom, her father, Michael Lohan, shouted, "We love you Lindsay!" before she was escorted away to begin her jail sentence.
Outside the courthouse, fan Joe Gasmann, 27, wearing a hand-lettered, pink "Free Lindsay" shirt and holding a sign with the same slogan, said he drove four days from Grand Rapids, Mich., to be at the courthouse.
He was excited to have caught a brief glimpse of the actress as she entered the courthouse.
"It's Lindsay Lohan -- she's the greatest actress," he said. "I think this is a serious injustice."
Moments earlier, Lohan had walked into the courthouse, wearing sunglasses and flanked by an entourage.
Earlier, Joe Bialer, 87, and his caretaker, Ryan Espino, 35, who live a block from the courthouse, were out for their regular morning walk when they came across the scene with dozens of photographers lining the walkway.
"I like her movies when she was a child," Espino said.
A handful of spectators came out for the actress, including a group of French tourists and Lohan supporter Jake Byrd, who was wearing a hat reading, "I (heart) celebrities" and a shirt with Lohan's face and the slogan "Linnocent."
"I'm here because she doesn't have the voice to speak for herself," he said.
After Lohan's court appearance, a couple of unmarked cars pulled up to the side of the courthouse to take her to jail. Paparazzi crowded around the vehicles to snap pictures through the tinted windows.
